Improving Indoor Air Quality with Air Purifiers

The fact is that the air inside our homes is usually more polluted then the outside the front door. Government studies have proven this and it is generally agreed that the cause is the air-tight-energy-efficiency that most homes and buildings are constructed with. While this efficiency is not a bad thing it does tend to play havoc with the air we breathe.
Lets take a look at the different air cleaner options and what they are designed to do:
For airborne dirt, dust, and pet dander you have several choices. If you are relying on that skinny 1-inch furnace filter that you are supposed to change every month but you never do you should realize that it will only filter out about 1% of the airborne particles that flow through it. So even running the fan on your HVAC system 24 hours a day will not do much the clean the air in your house if you don't have some form of additional filtration.
To increase your air filtering efficiency you can choose either a HEPA filter or an electrostatic filter. A HEPA or High Efficiency Particulate Arresting filter is probably the most efficient filter you can buy. It can capture over 99% of the airborne particles that get pulled through it. An electrostatic filter is only slightly less efficient then a HEPA filter and is able to filter out over 90% of airborne particles.
To add odor fighting capability to your air purification system you will need to consider an activated charcoal filter. While this type of filter will not do much for airborne dirt it will get rid of smells caused by smoke, cooking, pets, or other odor causing agents.
If bacteria, germs, and viruses are a concern then consider adding a high intensity UV (Ultraviolet) lighting unit to your HVAC system. UV light neutralizes and kills these little nastys rendering them harmless and keeping you and your family safe from the sickness they can cause.
As you can see there are several choices when it comes to choosing an air purifier. The important thing to consider is what level of filtration you need and make your final decision based on that.
