A GPS is the Gift to Give this Holiday Season

There is a refrain from that favorite holiday song that goes something like this; the horse knows the way to carry the sleigh through the white and drifted snow. These days we no longer can rely on a horses sense of direction to get us to grandmas house for the holidays. And relying on dad with his big fold-up map and his exclaiming I'm not lost while driving past the same gas station five times will be a thing of the past if you give him a GPS system for Christmas.
For a dad on the go who travels out of town for work, vacations, or other reasons a vehicular GPS system will get him where he wants to go quickly and easily. No more getting lost in unfamiliar cities or during those cross state jaunts.

The Global Positioning System is a series of satellites placed in orbit by the United States Department of Defense. The original purpose was to allow military units the ability to keep track of where they are and where they want to go with pin point precision. As the cost of this technology has fallen it has found its way into the consumer market place allowing the average Joe the ability to tap into its power.
The GPS receiver is the piece of this technology that we are interested in. Using its ability to receive signals from the satellites its internal software and algorithms calculates its position usually within several feet depending on its accuracy. It also compares its current location with other mapped data to show you where you are, which way you are going, and how fast you are going.
In a vehicular GPS system it also is able to give directions based on way points its current position and a destination that is designated or pre-programmed into its memory. These directions are given through on screen prompts and in many models voice commands. Having a voice giving directions is nice because it keeps dads eyes on the road.
As with everything in the world of GPS technology you get what you pay for. Prices for GPS systems start at around $100 and can go up to $500 or more. A good system that does everything you need will run between $200 to $300. The important thing is to buy a GPS system that does what dad needs it to do and keeps him getting lost whenever he leaves the house.
